Spotify Removes an Estimated 75 Million Tracks in Major AI Music Crackdown

Spotify has reportedly removed an estimated 75 million tracks from its platform in what could become one of the largest content purges in the history of music streaming.

However, the move is not a blanket ban on AI-generated or AI-assisted music. Instead, Spotify’s latest crackdown is focused on mass-produced, low-quality content uploaded at scale to exploit the platform’s royalty system.

The distinction is important. Spotify has made it clear that artists who use AI as part of a legitimate creative process are not the target. The company is instead taking aim at what the industry has increasingly begun to describe as “AI slop” — vast quantities of generic, low-effort music created primarily to generate streams rather than deliver meaningful artistic value.

## Why Is Spotify Removing Millions of Tracks?

According to Spotify senior director Sam Duboff, the biggest problem is scale. Modern text-to-song AI tools can create completed tracks in seconds, allowing bad actors to upload thousands of almost identical songs in a very short period of time.

Around 100,000 new tracks are reportedly uploaded to Spotify every day, while industry estimates suggest that AI-generated music could account for a significant share of new releases arriving on streaming platforms.

The financial incentive behind the scheme is relatively simple. Spotify’s royalty system operates through a shared pool, and fraudulent operators can attempt to exploit it by uploading huge volumes of generic ambient music, artificial meditation tracks and repetitive instrumental loops under fictional artist names.

Artificial streams generated by bots can then be directed toward these tracks, often through background, relaxation or focus playlists where listeners may never pay attention to the artist credited on the recording.

The money generated through these schemes ultimately reduces the share available to legitimate musicians. For independent artists who depend on streaming royalties to support their careers, the impact can translate into real financial losses.

## Spotify Is Not Banning AI-Assisted Music

Spotify has repeatedly emphasized that the use of artificial intelligence in music production is not, by itself, a violation of its rules.

Tracks created with the assistance of AI can remain on the platform when the creator has the necessary commercial rights and the technology is being used as part of a legitimate creative process. The focus of the crackdown is therefore on manipulation and abuse, rather than AI technology itself.

Spotify says it has strengthened its machine-learning systems to identify suspicious upload patterns and detect artificial streaming activity. The company has also banned unauthorized AI voice cloning, meaning songs that imitate an established artist’s voice without permission can be removed.

In addition, the platform has introduced measures designed to prevent third parties from scraping its catalog to train AI models without the necessary licensing agreements.

## The Push for Greater AI Music Transparency

The wider music industry is also calling for greater transparency around the use of AI.

Organizations including the IFPI and RIAA have pushed for clearer labeling standards that could indicate whether a song is fully human-made, AI-assisted or primarily generated by artificial intelligence.

Supporters argue that listeners should have more information about the music they consume. At the same time, clearer labeling could offer additional protection to artists whose voices, identities and creative work may otherwise be replicated or exploited without consent.

Spotify’s reported removal of 75 million tracks represents a significant escalation in the fight against streaming manipulation. However, it is unlikely to be the final step.

As AI music-generation tools become faster, cheaper and more accessible, streaming platforms will face increasing pressure to distinguish genuine creative work from content designed primarily to exploit algorithms, playlists and royalty systems.
