Kiko – World Cup Remixes
I composed World Cup in the lead-up to the 1998 World Cup, never imagining that France would become world champions just a few weeks later.
Originally, it was simply meant to be the closing track of my PHUNKY DATA live set. The melody came to me all at once, in a single take. Three hours later, the track was written and produced.
Released on SEKENCE, the label of Futuria Production, which produced major raves in the 1990s, World Cup captures the spirit of that era: creative freedom, collective energy and the meeting of musical worlds. It was a time when techno existed alongside the emerging French Touch scene, when artists were experimenting and raves were as much about discovery as they were about celebration.
In September 1998, Laurent Garnier played it at the very first Techno Parade in Paris. A defining moment. That was where it all really began.
Nearly thirty years after its creation, World Cup returns to SEKENCE with a new dimension. This release is part of an effort to pass that legacy on: introducing new audiences to a track and the culture it came from, while giving it a new life on today’s dancefloors.
For the occasion, Kiko brought together producers with whom he has shared a strong creative connection for several years. Each has made the track their own, bringing their individual sound and vision to create a distinctly contemporary reinterpretation of this piece born in 1998.
A new generation of remixes, faithful to the original’s DNA yet firmly rooted in today’s sounds. A passing of the torch between eras, driven by the same desire to create, to share and to make people dance.
